Acts of violence don’t help change political stances

On March 30, the Flagstaff Police Department issued a press release about a March 19 road rage incident that resulted in violence. The incident began at Butler Avenue and Milton Road and continued along Route 66 through the heart of downtown. Witnesses described erratic driving behavior, honking and disorderly hand gestures that were exhibited by the drivers of both a Chevrolet Cavalier and a Tesla prior to the altercation.

On March 11, the Sedona City Council took a positive step toward repairing its relationship with Sedona’s business community and our workers by again funding the Uptown Visitor Center at 80% of its costs and expenses for the second year in a row. The Sedona Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors had decided in April 2023 not to seek a service contract to use bed tax dollars in fiscal year 2023-24.

The city of Sedona and the Community Library Sedona are seeking applicants for Sedona’s inaugural Poet Laureate. Potential poets need to submit up to 10 pages of their original poetry by Wednesday, March 19. Sedona has had a long history of preeminent poets in the community. I first came to Sedona as an adult to compete in poetry slams hosted by the late Chris Lane after having been on the Flagstaff National Poetry Slam Team with him in 2001.

The Arizona Department of Transportation closed State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon from milepost 375, at Midgley Bridge, to milepost 395, at the top of the switchbacks, due to the winter snowstorm due to multiple vehicle slide-offs related to winter weather conditions and heavy snowfall. A notice was issued at 12:37 p.m. on Friday, March 7. An ADOT employee is turning around northbound traffic at Owenby Way at the north end of Uptown.

Since the passage of Senate Bill 1350 in 2016, Sedona residents have expressed growing concerns over the number of short-term rentals within city limits. Vacation rentals, primarily those listed on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo, but also those marketed directly to travelers through their own websites, have transformed the local housing market, although their effects on property values and the housing market aren’t entirely clear.
