A three-sport athlete in cross-country, basketball and baseball, he was two days shy of signing a contract to play minor league baseball when he blew out his elbow throwing a football with friends.     When Kristen McConnell was a little girl, her grandmother lived in a house along the town’s main thoroughfare. It had a screened-in front porch that became the neighborhood’s de facto gathering spot.
