Some of Duluth’s most-prized treasures — old maps, newspaper clippings, historic photos, original lift bridge and Glensheen blueprints, and more — are stored deep on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth, in an annex building that’s one of the school’s oldest and that’s hidden behind the Kathryn A. Martin Library. And they’re deteriorating. Nothing has been lost yet or has even been really damaged.

Some 3,000 Duluth fans filled the wooden bleachers and toed the freshly chalked sidelines at Athletic Park 100 years ago this week. On the field — then just beyond where Wade Stadium’s left-field wall stands today — the Duluth Kelleys and Akron Pros exchanged mostly line plunges and punts throughout much of Duluth’s first-ever professional gridiron game. Football was a far different sport a century ago.
