The UNMC Department of Pediatrics has added two new division chiefs. Salaheddin Elrokhsi, MD, became division chief of pediatric endocrinology at UNMC and Children’s Nebraska in July, while Melissa Muff-Luett, MD, became division chief of pediatric nephrology at UNMC and Children’s Nebraska in August. Dr. Elrokhsi completed his medical education at the University of Tripoli Faculty of Medicine in Tripoli, Libya.

The Child Health Research Institute will hold its third annual CHRI Scientific Conference on Friday, Nov. 8, at the University of Nebraska at Omaha Scott Conference Center. The scientific conference is CHRI’s flagship event that showcases the groundbreaking research being done by the research institute’s 500-plus members.

The Child Health Research Institute’s 2024 Pediatric Cancer Research Group Symposium, scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 27, will focus on pediatric brain tumor research. The annual symposium brings together stakeholders from academia, clinical operations, government, patient families and philanthropic groups who are invested in creating advancements in pediatric cancer treatments.

The Child Health Research Institute and UNMC Department of Pediatrics invite researchers to attend the “Grantsmanship” pediatric academic workshop on March 22 in the conference room/pre-function room at Children’s Nebraska on the first floor of Indian Hills East. Attendees will take part in a day-long exploration of the grant process with experts in the field and improve their skills in and understanding of creating a successful funding appeal.

The Child Health Research Institute, a partnership between UNMC and Children’s Nebraska, opened applications for three grant opportunities on Feb. 1. The CHRI Scholars Program grant is accepting applications, as are the CHRI Disparities Pilot Grants and the CHRI Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) Pilot Grants. The final submission date for all three is April 15 at 5 p.m. Notice of grant awards will be June 30. CHRI membership is required for all applicants.

The Child Health Research Institute’s heart diseases area of emphasis will host a Pediatric Heart & Vascular Diseases Mini Research Summit on Jan. 19, from 7:45-11 a.m.Brian McCrindle, MD, section head, preventative cardiology and epidemiology with the organization SickKids, will be the summit’s keynote speaker, as well as the Children’s Nebraska grand rounds lecturer on Jan. 19.

Kari Simonsen, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics, and Ann Anderson Berry, MD, PhD, executive director of the Child Health Research Institute, have been named as new members of the American Pediatric Society. Founded in 1888, the APS is North America’s first and most prestigious academic pediatric organization. Drs. Simonsen and Anderson Berry, will be recognized during the APS Presidential Plenary at the Pediatric Academic Societies 2024 Meeting, which will be held in May in Toronto.

Ann Anderson Berry, MD, PhD, executive director of the Child Health Research Institute and medical director for the Nebraska Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative, delivered the keynote speech at the Governor’s Maternal Health Symposium in September in Columbus, Nebraska. At this meeting, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen announced the extension of post-partum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to 12 months, which was supported by maternal child health advocates across the state.
