They’re back!Two male piping plovers were spotted Friday at Montrose Beach, according to Chicago Piping Plovers, an organization dedicated to protecting local plovers. The two banded birds were identified as Pippin, a plover that hatched in Wisconsin in 2023, and Uncle Larry, who hatched in Michigan in 2023. The two small, sand-colored shorebirds are the first to fly into a Chicago beach this year, with “hopefully” a few more on the way.

The annual Cinco de Mayo parade has been canceled, organizers announced Thursday. The parade, which typically attracts hundreds to the Southwest Side, commemorates Mexico’s victory over Napoleon’s French army in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. However, the celebration was canceled because of fears over the Trump administration’s immigration policies, said Hector Escobar, president of Casa Puebla and the Cermak Road Chamber of Commerce. “There is nothing to celebrate,” Escobar told the Sun-Times.

Two American families have reached a settlement in the deadly crash of a Boeing 737 Max 8 jet that claimed the life of 157 people in 2019, including a military service member from the Chicago area. Attorneys with Clifford Law Offices, Romanucci and Blandin, and Mark Lindquist Law announced that a resolution had been reached Sunday night in the cases of Lewis v. Boeing and Belanger v. Boeing, one day before trial was set to begin in Chicago.

A Naperville high school teacher was charged Thursday with sexually abusing a female student, officials said. William Schaub, an English teacher at Neuqua Valley High School, was arrested during a traffic stop near his LaGrange home for alleged aggravated criminal sexual abuse and grooming, Naperville police said. On March 7, police said they were notified that Schaub, 56, was having an “inappropriate relationship” with the student.

Multiple rounds of severe storms are expected to move across the Chicago area this week. Starting early Wednesday, the area could see showers, thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 30 mph, the National Weather Service said. A second, more powerful round of storms could develop late Wednesday morning and linger into the afternoon. The storms could bring damaging winds, hail and possible tornadoes, weather officials said. Wednesday’s high temperature will be 70, and the low will be 47.

A new flagship center in downtown Chicago aims to make trips to the DMV a whole lot easier. Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias cut the ribbon Tuesday on the new “state-of-the-art” facility at 125 W. Monroe St. The center will offer a suite of services while also cutting down on lines and wait times, he said.
