The last time a new university campus was built along Indiana Avenue, Black neighbors were displaced from their homes on the near west side. With that history in mind, as Purdue University embarks on a 50-year plan to expand its Indianapolis campus, college officials are turning to neighbors for advice. At the request of community members, Purdue’s planning to put more green space on its 28-acre campus south of Indiana Avenue, on the east side of what was once IUPUI’s campus.

May 28, 2025 IU Indianapolis recently removed two prominent signs that read “Black Lives Matter” and “Discrimination has no place here” from its downtown campus. The banners were displayed on the exterior of a skywalk at the intersection of West Michigan Street and Blake Street. Though it’s not clear when nor why the signs were removed, it appears to be part of IU’s efforts to comply with federal and state guidance surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion.

For Kaneka Kidd, college has very much been a family affair. She started classes through Marian University’s program at the Indiana Women’s Prison at the same time her youngest daughter started college. Kidd also called her grandkids often to tell them about the classes she was taking, to hopefully encourage them to attend college one day. It was important to her that her family knew she was learning while inside.
