Matthew Brodsky got his dream job in 2023. As a wilderness ranger for the Tongass National Forest, he patrolled Tracy Arm Fjord by kayak in the summer season, monitoring environmental data and providing information to mariners and visitors aboard cruise ships. But last week, Brodsky says he and other U.S. Forest Service staff in Juneau were called into a meeting.

A western Alaska tribal consortium has appealed a key permit for a proposed gold dredging project in waters near Nome. Kawerak, a nonprofit that serves some 20 Iñupiaq and Yup’ik tribes in the Bering Strait region, last month asked state regulators for a hearing on a wastewater discharge permit for the project.

The state’s top education official relied on generative artificial intelligence to draft a proposed policy on cellphone use in Alaska schools, which resulted in a state document citing supposed academic studies that don’t exist. The document did not disclose that AI had been used in its conception. At least some of that AI-generated false information ended up in front of state Board of Education and Early Development members.
