Most everyone knows that the National WWII Museum is one of New Orleans’ crown jewels. Its official opening 25 years ago as the National D-Day Museum attracted Hollywood celebrities, prominent elected officials, marching bands and some 10,000 veterans — including many who landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Today, the museum ranks among the most visited commemorative institutions in the country.

New Orleans’ history is filled with outsized political characters who, despite their shenanigans, left their marks on the city. In this age of social media, however, few pols dare to carry on that tradition. That’s what set former City Councilman Jay Batt apart from others of his generation — he fearlessly celebrated his penchant for hijinks. He also got things done. Much has been written — deservedly so — about Bubby Henry’s transformative impact on the arc of Louisiana politics and government during his tenure as House speaker, chair of the 1973 constitutional convention, lobbyist and statesman. The old saw that no one is safe in life, liberty or property as long as the Louisiana Legislature is in session was never truer than in Gov. Jeff Landry’s hastily called — and even more frantically concluded — special session on tax reform. In the final hours, lawmakers had little-to-no clear idea what they voted for, other than getting out of Baton Rouge in time to keep their pre-Thanksgiving travel plans. It’ll be interesting to see what happens once voters realize what’s about to change.

Only the rarest of people truly leave a mark on their chosen fields. Rarer still are those whose legacies impact, in a markedly positive way, multiple fields. The late U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan was one of those rarest of the rare. What set Berrigan apart, even more than her professional accomplishments, was the way she treated people — with unconditional compassion, kindness and, perhaps most disarming of all, good humor.
