Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area of Sand Hill Road between Santa Cruz Avenue and Sharon Park due to a water main break. Menlo Park police and utilities crews were on the scene as of 1:23 p.m., according to a release from the city of Menlo Park. There was no immediate word on when the busy thoroughfare would reopen. Menlo Park Police are warning motorists to avoid the area around Glenwood Avenue and the Caltrain railroad tracks due to congestion caused by a collision shortly after 4 p.m. today. Emergency crews were dispatched to the crossing on a report of a collision involving a train. Multiple crews remained on the scene 30 minutes after the initial report. it was not immediately clear what the train might have collided with.

An early-morning fire on Vera Avenue in Redwood City damaged an under-construction affordable housing project. No one was injured in the fire on Vera Avenue, which was first reported at 2:17 a.m. on Feb. 8. Firefighters from the Redwood City Fire Department an the Menlo Park Fire Protection District responded and were on scene for more than an hour, according to Redwood City Fire Battalion Chief Glendon Chan. He said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Palo Alto resident Julia Satterthwaite has been named the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year for 2025. Satterthwaite teaches journalism at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino. The announcement, from one of the preeminent scholastic journalism organizations in the country, was made on Feb. 7. Satterthwaite, who is married to Palo Alto High School journalism teacher Rod Satterthwaite, is in her 20th year as a journalism teacher and adviser.
