NORTHERN ONTARIO — Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) has announced that the federal government is on track to provide Canadian households access to high-speed internet by 2026. Recent stats clarify that 93.5 per cent of Canadians have high-speed internet and projections show that 98.6 per cent of households will have access by 2026.

ATIKOKAN - Members of the Atikokan OPP are investigating a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 11 approximately five kilometres west of Flanders Road. According to OPP, a 29-year-old lone driver from Thunder Bay was transported to hospital by EMS to be treated for their injuries. During their investigation Highway 11 was closed for 10 hours and reopened by 1:00 a.m. on January 3.

I best advice I’ve ever gotten was from one of my university professors. She told me, and I am paraphrasing here, that she doesn’t like to put favourites according to rank. “It places them in a hierarchy,” she said. I’ve always loved that because who’s to say that one story, for example, should be ranked higher than another? Out of the 511 stories I have written this year, they all have their merit and stand side by side as the voice of Northwestern Ontario.

NWO Northwest stated that impaired driving is on the rise in the region. “NWROPP continues to conduct Festive R.I.D.E. programs across the region and impaired numbers continue to rise. There are no excuses for driving while impaired,” stated OPP Northwest Region. Currently, there have been 2,311 Festive R.I.D.E events. Officers have issued 128 impaired driving charges and 17 Warn-Range Suspensions. Last year's campaign saw 2,294 Festive R.I.D.E events.

DRYDEN – In a Facebook post, Fire Chief Chris Wood has provided an update on an apartment fire that started on December 19. According to Wood, when fire crews first arrived, they “encountered heavy smoke on the second floor, located the affected apartment, and extinguished a kitchen fire.” Meanwhile, OPP Northwest, Dryden Fire Services, and EMS evaluated the building while additional fire crews ventilated the smoke from the building.
