HOUGHTON & HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) - Preparation for Houghton County’s annual Bridgefest is now underway. This includes registration opening up for food and non-food vendors. For two days, from afternoon to midnight, vendors can show off what they’ve got to Bridgefest visitors at Ray Kestner Park and along West Lakeshore Drive. Nonprofit organizations can also participate. According to the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce Manager Katie Schlief, last year’s vendor count was significant.

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - As part of Thursday’s National Day of Action in Higher Education, some Michigan Tech University faculty and staff gathered to make their stance clear. Thirty-three staff and faculty signed an open letter in support of ‘everyone across the country that is working to protect academic freedom and public science.’ In it, they commit to stand against anti-democratic pressures, uphold constitutional rights and elevate the ethics of scholarly disciplines.

(WLUC) - Residents and visitors can expect a major change to one of Houghton’s busiest intersections this summer. “A lot of people make bad decisions at that intersection, unfortunately,” Houghton City Manager Eric Waara said. “Ultimately, this is going to result in a safer intersection and safer way for people to get through.”Preparation is underway to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Canal Road and M-26.

Father Ben Hasse is preparing to celebrate his twelfth Easter as a pastor of Houghton County’s Catholic community. He says this year’s celebration is unique because for graduating seniors, Easter and their graduation will go hand-in-hand. “At Michigan Tech this year, Easter falls right before Finals Week,” Hasse said.

UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. (WLUC) - The Trump administration continues to review all federal spending. One of the latest funds to be impacted by cuts is a major humanities organization in Michigan. It hasn’t even been a week since the National Endowment for the Humanities cut off all federal grants to state humanities organizations. Michigan Humanities President and CEO Jennifer Rupp recalls receiving the news in emails from the Department of Government Efficiency in her spam folder.
