    LAURIUM, Mich. (WLUC) - The majority of nurses at Aspirus Keweenaw are preparing to hold a rally for safer staffing next week. According to the nurses, Aspirus now requires a nurse to care for five to six patients during a shift. Before, a nurse cared for three to four patients. These nurses are concerned that this will cause unsafe staffing for patients due to potentially stretching the nurses too thin.

Keweenaw County groups and businesses are getting ready for it. “Clearing down trees, raking and leaf blowing, and just making sure that overall, the trails are in great shape and a really good experience,” Copper Harbor Trails Club Executive Director Adam Yeoman said. That is just some of the work the Copper Country Trails Club must do before summer activities begin.

    HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - Dozens of student families at Houghton Elementary School got to take a look at their kids’ artistic creations Thursday evening. This was part of the school’s annual Fine Arts Night. Students of all grade levels showed off their themed art creations to their families. For example, fourth graders drew art based on Egyptian papyrus, while third graders made paper sculpture masks.

    HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) - It was all sunshine and cool breezes at an annual clean-up event in Hancock Thursday. Community members worked to spring-clean several parks as part of the City of Hancock’s Pitch in for Parks event. This includes Montezuma Park and Porvoo Park along the Portage Canal. Using rakes, trash bags, and even lawnmowers, volunteer teams work from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to tidy up the parks.

    LAKE LINDEN, Mich. (WLUC) - The Superintendent and middle/high school Principal of Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools is retiring. In an email to TV6, Brad Codere says he will remain in his position until the end of June. He notes he informed the school’s staff of this on Friday. His resignation letter will be “coming out soon” to the community, he added. The reason for his retirement has prompted some questions among community members.
