Grand Rapids’ Elliot Spahn-Luke Wheelock defeated Jace Anderson-Shawn Marcussen 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles to clinch the Section 7-2A opening-round win for the Thunderhawks over the Warriors.

EAST GULL LAKE — Brainerd’s Alex Imgrund knew he needed a birdie on his last hole Monday, May 12. The sophomore came to the par-5 18th hole tied for first in the Central Lakes Conference meet at Cragun’s Legacy Courses. Imgrund got up-and-down for birdie to shoot a 2-under, 69 and tab individual medalist honors at his home course. “I figured I was in there the whole round,” Imgrund said. “I missed a lot of good looks down the stretch.

BRAINERD — The Brainerd Warriors will get one more home match. Brainerd earned the No. 8 seed in the Section 7-2A Team Tournament and will host No. 9 seed Grand Rapids at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13. The Warriors finished the regular season with a couple of Section 7-2A losses to Blaine and Cambridge-Isanti Saturday, May 10, to tally a 6-14 record. The Thunderhawks and Warriors faced each other Wednesday, April 30, with Brainerd netting the home victory 5-2.

VERNDALE — Carter White loves Deacon’s Lodge. The Verndale senior won the Arnold Palmer Invitational for a third time Tuesday, May 6, with a 2-under, 70 to help the Staples-Motley Cardinals place second. White started his round with a bogey on the fifth hole. He bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole and a birdie on the par-3 11th hole. He carded back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 to reach 3-under.

BRAINERD — Brainerd goalie Eli DeRosier recorded 18 saves, but none bigger than the one in the final seconds to preserve an 8-7 win over the Big Lake-Princeton Huskies Friday, May 9. The Huskies made one last attempt in the final seconds to tie the game, but was thwarted by DeRosier as the clock hit zero. “Eli is fearless,” Warriors’ head coach Adam Extrand said. “He is big and strong.
