MICHAEL — Three Pequot Lakes relays will compete in the finals Thursday, June 12, after qualifying in the Class 2A state track and field prelims Wednesday, June 11, at St. Michael-Albertville High School. The 4x200 girls relay of Ashley Slaybaugh, Chelby Wothe, Josie Taylor and Ava Merta ran a seventh-place qualifying time of 1:43.37. Slaybaugh, Taylor and Merta were joined by Lila Nordby in the 4x100 relay that sneaked in as the last qualifier in 49.49.

ST. MICHAEL — Audrey Brownell is back on top. After placing second in the 3200-meter run yesterday, the Staples-Motley junior returned and repeated as state champion in the 1600 run in the Class 1A State Track and Field finals Wednesday, June 11, at St. Michael-Albertville High School. Brownell ran a 5:02.28, five seconds better than runner-up Valerie Quast of St Claire. Last season, Brownell was the state champion in the 800 and 1600 runs.

ST. MICHAEL — Turner Beachy was all alone Tuesday, June 10. The Staples-Motley junior was the only athlete to clear 14-foot-6 and 15-0 in the pole vault to win the state title in the Class 1A State Track and Field Prelims at St. Michael-Albertville High School. Beachy came in the favorite and made his starting height 13-6. He cleared 14-0 and 14-3 in one attempt, but needed two attempts to clear 14-6 to secure the title. It took three attempts to clear 15-0.

ST. MICHAEL — Ty Nelson saved his best jump for last. The Brainerd senior finished his high school career by jumping a new personal best and state meet record 49-foot-7.25 to win the state title in the triple jump for the second year in a row at the Class 3A Track and Field Prelims Tuesday, June 10, at St. Michael-Albertville High School. “Coach (Kris) Smith and I always say make your last jump the best jump,” Nelson said.

PIERZ — For the first time in eight seasons, the Pierz Pioneers are back in the Class 2A State Tournament. ST. MICHAEL — Pequot Lakes knows how to jump. The Patriots will send five different athletes in field events to the Class 2A State Track and Field meet June 11-12 at St. Michael-Albertville High School. Oliver McKenna, Bode Eggena and Becker Lipke all qualified for the high jump. McKenna won the section title by clearing 6-foot-3, while Eggena and Lipke cleared the state standard of 6-1. Senior Reese Laposky returns to state in the long jump and adds the high jump to her list this year.
