BRAINERD — In what has become a tradition worth waking up for, 23 Brainerd Warrior student-athletes celebrated their hard work Wednesday, May 14. Athletes celebrated Senior Signing Day in the early morning at Brainerd High School. A ceremony where national letters of intent to continue athletic and academic careers are signed, parents beam and high school coaches enjoy the fruits of their labor.

She showed why Friday, May 9, when the Brainerd Warriors senior shot a first-place 77 to win the individual title at the Presection 8-3A meet. Holmstrom went out with a 1-over 37 thanks to a birdie on hole two. A string of six straight bogies didn’t deter her as she rallied with a birdie four on the par-5 15th hole to finish with a 40 on the back nine and her 77.

BRAINERD — The same core group of former teammates and good friends is bringing the fourth annual Joe Haeg’s Game Winning Drive fundraiser back to the Brainerd lakes areaThis year’s event is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Cragun’s Legacy Courses. “We’re still banding together because we feel this event has a lot of potential,” tournament organizer Jesse Zahn said. “It’s the same football class of 2010 that graduated from Brainerd in 2011.

BRAINERD — Thea Anderson of the Minnesota West Lady Jays was strikeout victim No. 300 for Kaitlyn Geschwill’s career. The K also gave Central Lakes College a 5-1 victory Friday, May 9, in the Region 13A Championship game, advancing the Raiders to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament for the first time since 2016. “I’m so glad we could do this for our coach,” Geschwill said. “We did this for ourselves, each other, the school, but especially for Ray (Austin).

BRAINERD — Callie Skoglund doesn’t purposely try to make her pitcher mad — but she should. The junior catcher for the Brainerd Warriors knows, when Mya Tautges isn’t getting the calls she thinks she should, the mph on her pitches gets even faster. That was the case Thursday, May 8, as Tautges shut down the Alexandria Cardinals for an 8-1 Central Lakes Conference victory at Adamson Field. “She’s actually improved a lot since the beginning of the season,” Skoglund said.

BRAINERD -- For just the second time in program history a Brainerd Warrior hit the century mark. Gaje Germundson surpassed 100 career points in Brainerd’s 16-13 victory over Becker Tuesday, April 29. Germundson finished with five goals to lift Brainerd’s record to 4-2. For the season, the senior attacker has 20 goals and five assists. “Honestly, I just give all the credit to my teammates,” Germundson said. “I have five assists, so a lot of my teammates have all of the assists.

BRAINERD — By averages, Brainerd’s hurdle trio of Kyle Peterson, David Herath and Preston Miller is one of the best in the state. They showed why Tuesday, May 6, during the Section 8-3A True Team meet at Adamson Field. Peterson ran a 15.02 in the 110-meter hurdles for second. Herath was third and Preston Miller fifth. In the 300 hurdles, Peterson ran a second-place 41.44, followed by Miller in fourth and Herath fifth. Those places helped the Brainerd Warriors boys place third.
Girls Swimming and Diving: Brainerd’s Anderson honored by state

BRAINERD — Dan Anderson admits he’s a thief. He’s the Robin Hood of girls’ swimming and diving coaches. Stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. “I’ve picked the brains of a lot of smart coaches over the years and one of the best guys I ever coached against was during my first couple of years out in Wyoming and I remember asking him how he got his breaststrokers to swim so fast,” Anderson recalled.
