Carla Flagg remembers the joy of growing up in west Altadena. “We had these great pool parties where all the cousins and everybody would come to the Fair Oaks house,” she said smiling, as tears welled up in her eyes. Her parents owned the house and passed it down to her sister and her sister’s kids.

Ciressa Henderson stood in front of the State Farm catastrophe claims tent in Pasadena last week wearing a long red and black checkered cardigan and her grandmother’s necklace. It’s the outfit she had on when she evacuated the Eaton Fire the evening of Jan. 7. The three bedroom, two bathroom home she and her sister rented for the last 25 years burned down, taking with it her $16,000 lupus medication. “ That’s what I want to be worried about,” she told AfroLA.

She left with only the cat, Mookie, she’d been pet sitting.
