OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) –Fifty years ago, women were not allowed to become priests in the Episcopal Church. But eleven women accomplished it anyway, ordained by several retired bishops in Philadelphia. The movie “The Philadelphia Eleven” will be shown this Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Towngate Theatre and Cinema. The 90-minute documentary details how these women went forward despite threats and the risk of rejection by the church they loved. It’s a story of civil disobedience.

WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) – People in Wheeling have begun moving into the new homeless camp that’s exempt from the city’s public camping ban. The camp, off Peninsula Street, is 70 yards long with separate spaces for each campsite. They say the rules are the same as any park or campground–keep the area clean and free of bad behavior. The site has two portable toilets and one dumpster. While ideal in many ways, it is not close to resources in Wheeling that feed and help the homeless.

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) – On Wheeling Island, the number of people who needed help are actually equaled by the numbers of people who gave help. At the House of the Carpenter, they had thousands of dollars worth of cleaning supplies to give to flood victims. Today they had to restock when those supplies were wiped out, and there are still people in need. They showed up on foot, on bicycles and in cars. They were grateful to get buckets, detergent, scrub brushes, bleach, gloves and disinfectant.

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) – The Ohio County Health Department is offering free tetanus shots to anyone who’s been exposed to floodwater. They say all floodwater is considered contaminated, and may contain the bacteria that causes tetanus. They say getting floodwater in a wound–even a wound as small as a hangnail–can cause severe illness. You can also be exposed by touching your eyes after touching floodwater. And for a lot of people, we cannot remember the last time we got a booster.

WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — As the flood water recedes, a lot of clean-up is left to do. In this flood-prone area, the Wheeling Fire Department always offers help to residents whose basements are full of floodwater and mud. But that help can’t happen immediately. Fire Chief Jim Blazier says they are already compiling a list of people whose basements need to be pumped out. And the fire department will do that. But they can’t start until the river goes back below flood stage.

Outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is typically assessed using the Glasgow outcome scale extended (GOSE) with levels from 1 (death) to 8 (upper good recovery). Outcome prediction has classically been dichotomized into either dead/alive or favorable/unfavorable outcome. Binary outcome prediction models limit the possibility of detecting subtle yet significant improvements. We set out to explore different machine learning methods with the purpose of mapping their predictions to the full 8 grade scale GOSE following TBI. The models were set up using the variables: age, GCS-motor score, pupillary reaction, and Marshall CT score. For model setup and internal validation, a total of 866 patients could be included. For external validation, a cohort of 369 patients were included from Leuven, Belgium, and a cohort of 573 patients from the US multi-center ProTECT III study. Our findings indicate that proportional odds logistic regression (POLR), random forest regression, and a neural network model achieved accuracy values of 0.3–0.35 when applied to internal data, compared to the random baseline which is 0.125 for eight categories. The models demonstrated satisfactory performance during external validation in the data from Leuven, however, their performance were not satisfactory when applied to the ProTECT III dataset.
