Four northern Ontario cities rank among the top 10 in the province for the highest per-capita rates of fatal drug overdoses, according to preliminary 2024 data from the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario. Thunder Bay leads the list with 80 deaths last year – a rate of 69.14 per 100,000 people. Sault Ste. Marie follows with 38 deaths (48.36 per 100,000), Timmins records 18 deaths (40.74 per 100,000), and Greater Sudbury places seventh with 59 deaths (32.81 per 100,000).

Sault North Rotary is providing $15,000 in funding for local schoolchildren to take part in the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre‘s (CBHC) educational offerings. This new partnership will allow all Grade 6 students in Sault Ste. Marie to attend the heritage centre and receive curriculum-based programming free of charge. “This donation, $12,000 of the $15,000 is directly going to the Grade 6 Flight Program,” said Tim Murphy, the centre’s education coordinator.

A new not-for-profit psychotherapy clinic in Sudbury has received a $100,000 donation to support its first year of operation, helping bridge gaps in mental health services across northern Ontario. The Roles Alliance for Mental Health and Wellness, launched earlier this year, is an extension of the for-profit Roles and Associates practice established in 2018. The original clinic provides psychotherapy services in Sudbury, Espanola, Elliot Lake, Manitoulin Island, and Sault Ste. Marie.

The City of North Bay officially opened its new downtown all-wheel park on Friday afternoon. The Kiwanis All-Wheel Park is located behind Oak Street near the transit depot behind the basketball court close to the city’s waterfront. Dozens of boarders, cyclists and skaters were on hand to try out the new facility – which had actually been in use for a few days. City officials said the $1.9 million skate park is another addition to its growing downtown waterfront revitalization plan.

Children in Sault Ste. Marie will have a fresh place to play this summer after a major park revitalization, now bearing the name of the group that led its transformation. Kiwanis Park, formerly Rosedale Park, officially opened Wednesday following a $360,000 renovation funded by local Kiwanis clubs, donors, and in-kind work from the city. Ontario Provincial Police confirmed a third crash on a northern Ontario highway on Sunday. Around 5:15 p.m., police said a motor vehicle collision on Highway 69 at Highway 64 in Estaire, south of Sudbury, closed the northbound lanes. The road reopened just after 7:30 p.m.OPP Const. Rob Lewis told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca the crash involved a motorcycle and the driver sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
