Officials with a northern Ontario Indigenous child welfare agency are sounding alarm bells amid federal funding cuts and an increase in need. The need for foster families across the province has risen in recent years, but officials with Nogdawindamin Family and Community Services say that need has grown significantly this year. A shortage of drivers means seniors who rely on Meals on Wheels in Sault Ste. Marie aren’t getting their meals. The Sault’s Meals on Wheels program runs six routes a day, bringing warm meals to 120 seniors. But the shortage of volunteers means 45 elderly clients have gone without meals, says program coordinator Cassidy Ryan. “I went and delivered one route,” Ryan said.

It’s a sweet change for Sweet Change -- the former Sault Ste. Marie chocolate company is now under Algoma District School Board ownership. Now called Sweetened, the business still makes all the same sugary snacks, but teaches entrepreneurship and a range of skills to students. Sault chocolate company helps train students for business It has been sweet process for the Algoma school board, who took over a local chocolate company and is using it to train students.
