More than half of Ontario’s 480 wildfires last summer were in northeastern Ontario, according to new data from the Ministry of Natural Resources. Across the province, nearly 90,000 hectares of forest burned. MNR fire officer Chris Marchand said 262 of those fires were in the northeast region, covering 19,000 hectares. Northwestern Ontario saw 218 wildfires, consuming a total of about 69,000 hectares.

Friday morning in North Bay, the province announced a multi-million-dollar partnership with the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) to bring innovative technology into the vehicle supply chain and secure the jobs of the future in the auto sector.

A language immersion camp taking place at Canadore College in North Bay is teaching Anishinaabemowin, the original language of the Anishinaabeg culture. The camp is being led by fluent speakers and second-language learners with Ninaatigoons Learning. “My family is from Garden River First Nation and we have a history of residential schools and I want to speak the language,” student Ali Darnay said.

A man charged with murder in a fatal stabbing in North Bay on New Year’s in 2021 pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter Monday morning in a North Bay courtroom. Ghislain Nsengiyumva, from Ottawa, admitted to stabbing the 29-year-old victim to death in the early hours of Jan. 1 following two assaults and threats at a small party.
