Over the weekend, I joined scores of journalists, students and newsroom leaders at a conference put on by the Northern California chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. I sat in on panels, held on the University of San Francisco campus, focused on public records, journalism ethics, political coverage and newsroom survival. Through it all, one thing rang clear: local news is in trouble — but not without hope. That’s something we’ve seen firsthand in Napa County.

Updated at 6:50 p.m. Thursday — MediaNews Group, one of the county’s largest newspaper publishers, has purchased Sonoma Media Investments, the owner of The Press Democrat, the two companies announced Thursday afternoon. In addition to its Santa Rosa-based flagship, a news release announcing the deal said the Denver-based company also purchased Sonoma Magazine, Sonoma Index-Tribune, Petaluma Argus-Courier, North Bay Business Journal, Sonoma County Gazette and La Prensa Sonoma.
