Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. hasn’t hit a home run on the field this season but apparently has hit his biggest one in private. The slugging first baseman has agreed to stay with the Toronto Blue Jays on a 14-year, $500 million contract extension that ranks second only to Juan Soto in terms of up-front dollars. Soto signed a 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets on Dec. 11, 2024. First reported by Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, the Guerrero deal is not official, pending a physical.

The New York Mets thought they caught a bad break when Francisco Alvarez broke a bone in his left hand in early March. Alvarez, their power-hitting young catcher, needed surgery and was expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks. Shortly before the Mets opened their 2025 home season April 4 with a 5-0 victory over Toronto, however, manager Carlos Mendoza told the media that Alvarez was ahead of schedule.

Baseball books and memorabilia will be available for purchase by customers of the New York International Antiquarian Book Fair, a four-day event that starts Thursday night. So says Josh Mann, a baseball fan who is co-owner of B & B Rare Books and partner of fair chairperson Sunshine Steinbirchner. The 65th annual show features some 200 vendors, selling everything from modestly-priced $50 volumes to extremely rare finds that carry seven-figure price-tags.
