NEBRASKA CITY – Photographs of a man, who corresponded with James Meredith on the day he enrolled at the University of Mississippi on Oct. 1, 1962, amid riots to break the color barrier in a flagship Southern university, have turned up in Nebraska City. T.G. Zimmerer’s letter to Meredith expresses support for his enrollment and admiration for his courage. The letter has been preserved by the University of Mississippi as part of a collection showing national attention on integration.

NEBRASKA CITY – The Nebraska City School Board approved student teacher stipends in all subjects at its June 9 meeting. The school’s student teacher agreement offers pay similar to a substitute teacher. Last year, the stipend was only available for secondary math and science and special education. The board expanded the stipend this summer to include all subjects for the next school year. Superintendent Mark Fritch said the last couple of years, Nebraska City has operated short four teachers.

NEBRASKA CITY – Police Chief Ben Murry told city commissioners Monday that the police department has reached its $81,000 goal for a second K9 unit. The city expects to receive a dog from BlueStreak out of Jonesboro, Ark., this fall and Ofc. Jacob Stenka is planning to begin training with the yet unnamed dog to obtain certifications in narcotic detection, handler protection and tracking.

NEBRASKA CITY - Hot temperatures are expected for the weekend. A high temperature of 101 degrees is forecast for Friday with 57 percent humidity. Those factors calculate to a dangerous heat index of 129 degrees. 130 degree heat index is considered "extreme danger."Saturday’s high is forecast at 99 degrees and it will be 96 degrees on Sunday. UV index of 9 Friday is very high with 11 being the highest on the chart. Concrete and white sand on the beach will reflect UV rays and can double UV exposure.

COUNCIL BLUFFS -- An estimated 10,000 people took part of a No Kings protest at Tom Hanafan Park in Council Bluffs Saturday. Gov. Jim Pillen had activated the National Guard prior to protests at several locations in the state, but the Council Bluffs event, which spilled over to the Bob Kerrey bridge, was peaceful. When a platform speaker announced the murder of a Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman and her husband he asked for a moment of silence.
