“Legend is history, in the sense that it tells of a past that is fictional and real,” Cheryl Clarke explains to me one evening as we talk about the role of legend in Black history. On Aug. 15, Clarke is releasing a collection of poems spanning from the beginning of her career to new, previously unpublished works, titled Archive of Style: New and Selected Poems. Some of these poems deal in legend; from fictionalized stories of real events, to undeniable fact.

Back in 2010, when many Gen Zers were making their way through middle school, a new song hit the airwaves and rocked some worlds. It was “Whip My Hair” by Willow Smith, the then 10-year-old daughter of mega stars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Since then, Smith’s icon status has only grown. Being the daughter of legends of music and the screen is no doubt daunting, but Smith has always handled it with grace.

Brittany Howard released her second solo album, What Now,last month. After leaving her previous band, Alabama Shakes, in 2018, Howard released her first solo project, Jaime, in 2019. Jaime presented a familiar sound to Howard’s fans, with her signature booming vocals and a bluesy, soulful sound. On What Now, Howard takes more risks, and seems to have a lot of fun in the process.

Unsurprisingly, the app has become a haven for short-form comedic videos an if you have TikTok, chances are there is at least one person on the platform that you turn to for laughs. Since 2021, one of those people has been Eric Sedeño for me.

Back when I was a teenager, there weren’t many queer pop stars. We had Tracy Chapman, Tegan and Sara and other queer women musicians who played in other genres. But pop music was straight—like, painfully so. I didn’t technically become a teenager until 2005, but even before then I was cognizant of the landscape of pop music. We had songs like “All the Things She Said” by t.A.T.u. and “I Kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry. It was a desert back then. And the general public was deeply homophobic.
