Not long ago, you could walk into any gym and be met with a personal trainer who would swear a series of crunches and situps could get you a six-pack in no time. Don't get us wrong, dedicated abs exercises shouldn't be ruled out altogether, but strengthening your core isn't as simple as burning out your midsection once a week. While our obsession with abs saturates fitness culture, from CrossFit to Pilates, do you really know what core training is?

Last spring, I told my therapist I wanted to become a therapist. He suggested I become a coach instead, like him. Now, to be clear, my therapist, whose name is Peter Carnochan, is indeed a therapist. He has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, trained as a psychoanalyst in the tradition of Freud and commands high fees from clients in San Francisco and across the Golden Gate Bridge at his own magnificent home under the redwoods.

Last winter, my 53-year-old sister told me she was tired of her profession and wanted to become a therapist. Nothing noteworthy there: 76% of psychotherapists are women and it’s been that way for decades. I surprised my sister by confessing that, after 25 years as a journalist, I, too, wanted to become a therapist – and was already in graduate school making it happen. My sister soon texted that she’d told her husband, Mario, and it turned out that he, too, was thinking of becoming a therapist.

Like most YouTube videos posted by Nathan Florence, a 29-year-old surfer known for riding the world’s scariest waves, the clip posted on April 12, 2019, leads with cuteness. Titled “Full Day of Surfing with My Brothers and John Gives Me a Board to Try!!! || Nate’s Big Adventure,” it opens mid-frame like a raw home movie. You see Florence barefoot and giggling in surf trunks on green grass, shaggy brown hair cut in a DIY-looking mullet.

A snarky remark by my friend Kevin changed everything I thought I knew about surfboards. After parking in front of his house by San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, I unloaded the hefty eight-foot surfboard that guys like us ride when we reach middle age. But Kevin, 62, appeared with a snazzy little 6-foot-4-inch shortboard that looked like something 11-time world champion Kelly Slater would have ridden in his heyday. Shortboards are like Formula One race cars—insanely fast and fun, but super hard to ride.

This has been the naming standard in California suburban housing development for decades: Orchard Estates; Oak Glen Homes … i.e. whatever you had to destroy to build more sprawl

I’m very much not on principle opposed to new housing developments on city-fringe former farmland… …but naming the streets after the very bird species displaced by the development feels like a chef’s-kiss of disdain, a post-pastoral f*ck-you. Is this widespread? https://t.co/wyZLSphdVJ
