The Broadway play “The Shark Is Broken,” a comedy-drama based on the making of the movie “Jaws,” is coming to the Vineyard this summer in celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary.
The play is currently touring the U.K. and Ireland, after running from August to September 2023 on Broadway in New York’s John Golden Theatre. It will be on the Island amid the height of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the premiere of “Jaws” on June 20.

Candidates for Aquinnah’s select board spoke their minds at a public forum last week, addressing housing worries and whether to regionalize a short-staffed police department.
First-time Aquinnah select board candidate Chris Manning is set to challenge three-term incumbent Gary Haley for the only contested position in the May 15 election. Manning, keeper of the Gay Head Light since 2021, has served as town constable, and with multiple Island police departments.

William H. Luers, a summer Island resident across four decades, career diplomat, and former president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, died Saturday at his home in Washington Depot, Conn. He was 95. Luers, born and raised in Springfield, Ill., dedicated his life to advancing democracy, arts, and culture.

Voters at Aquinnah annual town meeting approved borrowing to fund repairs at town buildings, and voted to place on the ballot a debt exclusion for the regional school district.
At town hall on Tuesday night, Tom Murphy, town select board and infrastructure committee chair, advocated for borrowing $135,000 to improve town offices.

Tisbury wrapped its second and final night of its spring town meeting Wednesday after falling below quorum in the middle of approving the warrant on the first night.
Overall, voters approved 52 articles in town meeting. According to moderator Deborah Medders, this year’s town meeting presented the lowest number of articles in Tisbury’s modern history. On Wednesday night, voters had to wait 20 minutes after the 7 pm start time for a 100th eligible voter to show up and reach a quorum.

Tisbury will need to finish off its annual town meeting on Wednesday after attendance fell below quorum on Tuesday night about halfway through the warrant. Before filing out of the new Tisbury School gymnasium, voters did manage to update the town administrator’s job description, restrict funding for new moorings, and turn down renovations at a proposed employee housing development.
Town meeting will resume at 7 pm at the Tisbury School gymnasium on Wednesday night. Over a dozen articles remain.

Tisbury has become the fifth town to approve phasing out gas-powered leaf blowers, doing so by a majority vote on Tuesday at town meeting.
In the down-Island town, the article bans gas-powered leaf blowers effective March 15, 2028 and limits their use until then. Gathered at the gymnasium of the recently completed Tisbury School, voters passed the bylaw around 8 pm after a series of proposed amendments.

Chilmark and Tisbury voters are set to vote on phasing out the use of gas-powered leaf blowers — possibly becoming the fourth and fifth towns on the Island to do so.
First, Chilmark votes at its annual town meeting on April 28 at 7 pm at the Chilmark Community Center. Its leaf-blower ban comes midway through a 25-article warrant. The ban permits gas-powered blowers through May 2028, but restricts their use to 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, and 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday.
