There are few players over the last decade who have been as beloved as Anthony Santander. So when his replacement Tyler O’Neill came in this winter, it was to be expected that he may not elicit that same reaction at first as his predecessor did. Perhaps his play in the opening series in Toronto, when he went 4-for-10 and extended his opening day home run streak to six, opened up some hearts.

Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser is going on the injured list with a fractured left thumb and will miss Monday’s home opener, the Orioles announced. Dylan Carlson was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. Cowser hurt his thumb in Sunday’s series finale in Toronto when his thumb was bent back sliding into first base, forcing the Orioles to pinch-hit for him in the ninth inning with back-up catcher Gary Sánchez. Cowser was 2-for-16 with a home run in the first four games of the season.

TORONTO — Cade Povich was torn. He made the Orioles out of camp, earning his first spot on an opening day roster and the honor of being the starter for Monday’s home opener. But now he had a major decision to make. To begin not only his season but the first game of the year at Camden Yards, which song should he warm up to? The way he saw it, he had two options. “The Real Slim Shady,” a play off the alter ego that helped him find confidence in his rookie season.

TORONTO — Tomoyuki Sugano made a reputation in Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan for his command. The three-time Central League MVP threw six pitches with near perfection, accumulating 111 strikeouts in 156 2/3 innings last season. So it seemed out of character on Sunday, as Sugano made his MLB debut for the Orioles, that he walked the first batter he faced on four pitches. The rest of his first inning was rocky.

Fans will need to get to Oriole Park at Camden Yards a few minutes earlier on Monday. The start time for the home opener against the Red Sox has been moved from 3:05 p.m. to 2:35 p.m. as the team attempts to avoid storms that are forecasted to arrive in the afternoon. Parking lots will still open at 11 a.m., followed by gates at noon.

Reminder that last year against the Yankees Kjerstad got a concussion after being hit in the head with a pitch

A pretty calm outcome at second base. Heston Kjerstad slid into second and had his head landed on by Pablo Reyes, who leaped for a throw to second. A whole lot of nothing, is the outcome https://t.co/YN2S2Edxuq

Andrew Kittredge had a live BP today. He’ll go on a rehab assignment next
