Standing before the pool of reflection, holding an elaborate wreath of native Australian flowers, I glance sideways. The elderly woman next to me has tears welling in her eyes and the moment I see them, my lip wobbles, my eyelids burn and my ducts begin to leak. I try to imagine who she is honouring here today. A parent? A grandparent? A sibling? A child? I’m surprised. I didn’t expect to feel this emotional. My connection to fallen soldiers is so far removed as to be irrelevant.

"Listen to the stream,” says my therapist as she places a wheat mask over my eyes. Beyond the ambient music tinkling through the speakers I hear the stream trickling outside the open window. I inhale and consciously relax my muscles, one limb at a time, until my body feels lighter. On the other side of the room, I hear my mum sigh happily. We are at the Hepburn Spa & Bathhouse for a weekend stay in a Wellness Villa. The first part of the experience is a treatment at the day spa.
