Jimmy Thelin rolled the dice at Hampden and his big gamble paid off in handsome style. Before a ball was kicked, most neutral observers felt this year’s Scottish Cup final was close to a foregone conclusion with Celtic heavy favourites to complete a domestic clean sweep. It felt like there was no expectation on the Dons and they were able to head to Hampden under minimal pressure. But that is not to suggest the pressure was off Jimmy Thelin.

It was a day to remember for the 20,000 Aberdeen fans who were at Hampden to cheer on the Dons against Celtic in the final of the Scottish Cup. The wait for the Scottish Cup final is almost over. Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin must name the starting line-up he feels can deliver a first Scottish Cup success since 1990 for the Dons. There is plenty for the Swede to ponder. Will captain Graeme Shinnie be better deployed at left back or in the centre of midfield? Should Hibernian-bound Jamie McGrath be selected ahead of Pape Gueye? And what about Aberdeen’s player of the year Shayden Morris?

Aberdeen and Celtic are gearing up to lock horns in this weekend’s Scottish Cup final at Hampden. The Hoops also provided the opposition when the Dons last won the national competition in a mammoth penalty shootout in 1990. In the build-up to the 1990 final, the Press and Journal featured four pages of player ratings compiled by then Rangers striker Ally McCoist. McCoist, who was only 27 at the time and Rangers’ top scorer that season, provided a detailed analysis of each player.
