The ACLU of Michigan filed a federal lawsuit on Thursday along with an emergency motion to address the statuses and keep the four from being detained or deported. One student has lived most his life in the country, per the lawsuit. Another was once arrested but never charged in a domestic dispute. None have been involved in campus protests.

Children with autism wander more than unaffected siblings and are at risk of drowning or traffic injury when they do. A doctor and a former fire marshal, police chief and behavior analyst spoke to the Free Press about whether they would recommend door locks to keep kids safe, alternatives and free resources.

    Hannah, Jeremiah and Jacob Oliora, 16, 14 and 12, died after a Feb. 2 house fire in West Bloomfield Township. The middle child, Jeremiah, was nonverbal, had autism and left unannounced so his parents installed an interior front door lock with a key, affidavits show they told police. Search warrant affidavits also show what Hannah told 911, what firefighters observed inside the home, and more. A nonverbal child with autism kept leaving his home unannounced, his parents told detectives.
