Two people are dead and a man who held Sacramento police at bay for hours before surrendering early Friday has been arrested in the slayings. A gunshot just after 11:30 p.m. Thursday sent Sacramento officers to a home in the 4400 block of 71st Street, in the city’s Colonial Heights neighborhood. The man emerged more than five hours later and surrendered to officers. Inside, were the bodies of a man and a woman, both shot dead, said a Sacramento Police spokesperson.

A Sacramento man and his father were arrested Thursday on murder and accessory charges after authorities discovered the body of the man’s missing roommate miles away in El Dorado County. Somboun Sayasane was 75 went he went missing in late December near his south Sacramento home near 40th Street and 41st Avenue, said Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office officials.

A traffic collision in south Sacramento County has resulted in major injuries, said California Highway Patrol officials. The wreck, just before 6:40 a.m. Thursday, has closed South Watt Avenue from Elder Creek Road to Florin Road, according to the patrol’s South Sacramento office. It wasn’t immediately known how many vehicles were involved in the crash or how many were injured.

Three men are under arrest on murder charges in the November double slaying of a Sacramento man and woman, Sacramento police officials announced Wednesday. Jakiem Gerard Halstead, 26, of Marysville; and Isreal Melcheside Murray, 24, of Sacramento, are being held without bail in Sacramento County custody. Halstead, a convicted felon, faces a murder charge and a second charge of possessing a firearm as a felon.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District officials suspect someone has been deliberately igniting ornamental trees and plants after weeks of numerous reports of suspicious fires across Carmichael, Metro Fire officials said in a Monday news release. Ornamental trees are small, flowering trees such as dogwood, Japanese maple and cherry plum.
80-year-old dies in solo Sierra crash near Alpine Village

An 80-year-old man died Saturday when his car struck a tree and overturned near Alpine Village, said California Highway Patrol officials. Officials at the patrol’s South Lake Tahoe office announced the fatality on Tuesday. The unidentified man was driving a Chevrolet HHR Saturday on Highway 88 near Snowshoe Springs Road west of Alpine Village when the car went off the roadway, struck a tree and flipped onto its side.
