SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — A Shelby Township couple is out $50,000 after falling for an email phishing scam, according to police. The suspect, Vedantkumar Bhupenbhai Patel, is in jail on charges of false pretenses and larceny. Police said the 25-year-old is in the United States on a student visa and has an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer for deportation.

WHITE LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — White Lake Township supervisor Rik Kowall gave 7 News Detroit a tour around the new civic center construction site. He said the former cornfield is “turning into an area where people will be able to gather and hopefully have a nice sense of community.” Right now, crews are working on the construction of the foundations for the new township hall and the adjacent public safety department.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WXYZ) — The case of Christopher Schurr entered day five of testimony with the former Grand Rapids police officer taking the stand in his own defense. Schurr is on trial for shooting and killing Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop. A jury must decide if the shooting was justified. This is the first time Schurr has spoken publicly about the April 2022 incident. Schurr's defense attorney asked him, "Do you understand you have a right not to testify?""I do," Schurr replied.

Fire investigators are working to determine what caused the building to go up in flames.
