Barbara Lee appears to have topped Loren Taylor and nine other candidates to become Oakland’s next mayor, according to results published Friday April 18. Lee will be the first Black woman to serve as mayor of the city. The Alameda County registrar of voters office released a big new batch of results on Friday, three days after the deadline for voters to turn in ballots. There are still some ballots left to count and the final results could shift, but most observers believe Lee has decisively won.

With only a few days of voting left in the Oakland mayor’s race, the leading candidates are ramping up their messaging, crisscrossing the city, and making interesting alliances with opponents to seek advantages in the ranked-choice voting process. Meanwhile, PACs backing Lee and Taylor are continuing the frenzy of spending on ads, mailers, canvassing, and lots more. Have you decided who you are going to vote for? News that former Mayor Sheng Thao’s chief of staff, who stayed on this year after Thao left and was indicted, has eclipsed the drama in the Oakland mayor’s race. Every spring, a stand of gnarled old cherry trees on the shore of Lake Merritt between Bellevue Avenue and El Embarcadero put on an astounding floral show. Their buds emerge in April as marble-sized magenta spheres that burst into pink ruffled clusters of flowers. At their fullest, the trees drape themselves in jaw-dropping blossoms. Visitors often stop and admire the rosy-petaled boughs. Some might also wonder about the trees’ history.

The wildflowers are blooming so it’s time to lace up your boots and head out to enjoy the hunt. I love to hike, so I’m often asked where the good wildflower spots are. Below is my pick of favorite places — some nearby, and a few within about an hour’s drive of Berkeley. Notes: I’ve referred to flowers by their common names so if you love the Latin, look for the many online resources for that. Check out the online trail maps to plan your routes and find out about any trail closures.

It would be a good idea for reporters savvy in finance, SEC filings, and OGE forms to closely scrutinize the stock trades of people close to Trump right now.
