New name, same game: Clapham Discount Store replaces Kitchen Shoppe

The Kitchen Shoppe premises have reopened as the Clapham Discount Store after a complete refit, continuing to serve the same household goods needs that kept it trading for 20 years. The new owners have unfortunately fallen into the familiar trap of confusing Clapham with Battersea, despite the shop’s actual Lavender Hill location. A month ago we reported on the end of the Kitchen Shoppe after 20 years of trading.

A vehicle fire and a fatal crash shut down eastbound Interstate Highway 580 in Livermore early Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol said. Around 2:40 a.m., patrol officers were alerted to a collision involving a motorcycle on I-580's eastbound lanes near the Isabel Avenue off-ramp, according to the CHP.
Major transbay BART line suspends service in both directions

There is no service on BART’s Green line, which runs from Berryessa to Millbrae, the transit system announced early Thursday morning. The closure was first reported shortly before 4:30 a.m.The transit system has advised passengers traveling from San Francisco can board a Dublin/Pleasanton train (Blue line) and transfer at Bayfair to a Berryessa train (Orange line). Those traveling from Berryessa can board a Richmond train (Orange line) and transfer at Bayfair to a Daly City train (Blue line).
BART station closure halts all service on major East Bay line

A BART train waits for passengers in San Francisco, Calif., on Feb. 15, 2022. Service was halted on the Berryessa line due to a station closure on May 20, 2025. BART service has halted on Tuesday morning between Berryessa station and Lake Merritt, the transit agency reports. The disruption in service, first announced at 5:19 AM, is due to a full closure at the San Leandro station because of a nearby fire. Passengers are advised to find alternative forms of transportation.
Queenstown Road Station’s second entrance is finally happening

This was originally proposed way back in 2014, as part of Taylor Wimpey’s ambitious Battersea Exchange development, which combined lots of little bits of land, two railway viaducts and a school, to create new flats, shops and office space (and a replacement school).

It’s rare to see new houses rather than flats in Battersea – but six of them are coming to a sliver of land you’ve probably never noticed, hidden away behind two rows of Victorian tenement flats on Theatre Street and Latchmere Street. The picture above shows their location (shaded in red) – where they will replace a series of small workshops that are spread along a thin passageway, almost completely hidden from every angle (apart from a glimpse through a gate on Heathwall Street, shown below).

Bohem Brewery’s third London venue transforms the long-empty Queen’s Arms into a Czech beer specialist pub. Opening within weeks at 139 St Philip Street with authentic Bohemian lagers, traditional pouring techniques, and Czech pub snacks. A new pub’s coming to Battersea – and it’s set to be a bit special. The 180-year-old Queen’s Arms has stood empty for a couple of years, has a new occupant – as the third venue for Bohem Brewery, who specialise in traditional Bohemian-style lagers.
