The Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) will host a virtual town hall on Thursday to explain its budget process, review state funding, and provide updates about potential layoff and reassignment notices given to hundreds of staff in early March. Some employees recently had their notices rescinded as officials continue to make progress on balancing a more than $7 million budget deficit.

On the trails of the East Bay hills and beyond, Willard Middle School 8th-grader Jacob Segrè has run above the fog line at 6 a.m., seen cows give birth, and been asked by adults: Where’s your mom? Segrè joined his school’s cross-country team as a 7th-grader and immediately displayed innate talent, according to Danielle Perez, his head coach at Willard. But, she added, he still needed some refinement. Roughly a year later, Segrè has achieved that and a lot more.

City officials are cutting transportation benefits older adults and people with disabilities use to access health care and social services around town, following surges in applications and ridership costs. The Berkeley Rides for Seniors and the Disabled (BRSD) program, operated by the Department of Health, Housing, and Community Services, provides eligible residents free taxi services from cabs, accessible wheelchair van rides and trips on Uber and Lyft. It is funded by Alameda County Measure BB.

Some of Berkeley’s most linguistically gifted elementary, middle and high school students performed spoken word poetry and speeches to honor leaders of the Harlem Renaissance last week during the school district’s annual oratorical festival celebrating Black History. The tournament-style competition has taken place since 2018.

Students in Berkeley High’s band and orchestra were in Honolulu this week, representing the city of Berkeley at a Hawaiian music festival that brings together student musicians from around the world. At the Pacific Basin Music Festival, students have a chance to perform in a professional hall and tour the state learning about Hawaiian culture, according to Karen Wells, a BHS teacher and one of the band directors.
