    WAHOO have always been one of my favourite species of fish to catch. In most areas they aren’t all that common, and off the Gold Coast where I live they turn up in erratic numbers each year. Some seasons we see plenty, but more generally we catch maybe half a dozen as by-catch when chasing billfish with lures. There are specific ways to target wahoo at certain times of the year and the following article will explain some of those methods in detail.

    WE’D been dragging lures across a seemingly lifeless ocean for about five hours. There was not much chatter on the boat radio, and on a calm day on a smooth sea we drifted into an air of somnolence as the lures bubbled through a glass sea. Sometimes when it is like this, you start to see things that aren’t there. A fin, a shadow, a dark shape in a wave. For a second I thought I was imagining I saw a deep shadow behind the closest lure. Then a fin, a bill and a huge hit made the reel scream.

    THE length of line directly near the hook or lure is called the leader. In a lot of modern lure fishing with braided line a length of leader is attached to the braid as a matter of course. People do not even think about it, it is done as a matter of habit. There is an overarching idea that the leader makes the lure or bait less visible to the fish.
