WE’D been dragging lures across a seemingly lifeless ocean for about five hours. There was not much chatter on the boat radio, and on a calm day on a smooth sea we drifted into an air of somnolence as the lures bubbled through a glass sea. Sometimes when it is like this, you start to see things that aren’t there. A fin, a shadow, a dark shape in a wave. For a second I thought I was imagining I saw a deep shadow behind the closest lure. Then a fin, a bill and a huge hit made the reel scream.

WHILE South Australia may not be viewed as an enviable sport fishing destination in a global sense, our state is steeped in early game fishing history and still boasts some exceptional sport fishing for those in the know. The likes of Alf Dean, Ern Palmer, Jim Cowell and Jim Veitch helped put SA on the angling map back in the 1950s with world record captures of great white sharks at locations such as Port Lincoln, Streaky Bay and Ceduna.

SYDNEY is not only known for its stunning beaches, iconic landmarks, and vibrant culture, it’s also a haven for anglers of all skill levels and from all walks of life. SPRING has sprung and inshore snapper are on the run. Pearl perch and other winter species that come closer to shore in the colder weather, as well as the large mulloway that patrol the mullet highways are done for the year. Gone too, are the layers of “sparrow-fart” jumpers, beanies and spray jackets required to keep feeling in the extremities as pre-dawn temperatures batter the body travelling down-river towards the bar.

CATCHING fish in the shallows rewards good fishing skills. Seeing a cruiser before it detects your presence requires keen eyesight and a stealthy approach. As a bonus, the fight is often frantic as the fish seeks the sanctuary of deeper water. Success in shallow water can be elusive because this zone has a way of exposing an angler’s shortcomings.

FISHING the bottom layers of the water column has always been a popular past time, but in recent years a lot of the more traditional methods used have changed from traditional bait fishing rigs to using soft plastics, slow jigs and octopus style jigs. Where I live on the Gold Coast yellowtail kingfish, amberjack, cobia, samson fish, snapper, mulloway and pearl perch make up the majority of recreational catches in deep water.
