WE’D been dragging lures across a seemingly lifeless ocean for about five hours. There was not much chatter on the boat radio, and on a calm day on a smooth sea we drifted into an air of somnolence as the lures bubbled through a glass sea. Sometimes when it is like this, you start to see things that aren’t there. A fin, a shadow, a dark shape in a wave. For a second I thought I was imagining I saw a deep shadow behind the closest lure. Then a fin, a bill and a huge hit made the reel scream.

WHILE South Australia may not be viewed as an enviable sport fishing destination in a global sense, our state is steeped in early game fishing history and still boasts some exceptional sport fishing for those in the know. They always seem to find and catch fish at any time of the year. Their secret is very often knowing where the fish will be but, more importantly, why they will be there. Before we go any further, what exactly is an estuary? Without going into scientific terms, an estuary is the sheltered and often shallow waterway at the lower end of a river system. It could be a large bay, or the lower part of a river before it enters the ocean.
