ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Earlier this year, longtime Rockford alderman Tuffy Quinonez passed away. His friend, Isidro Barrios, has taken his spot… albeit with a heavy heart. “I miss him. I lost a real good friend,” Barrios said, calling being sworn in as Rockford’s interim 11th Ward Alderman bittersweet. “The moment he was gone was really sad for me, because now, it’s all on one person. He had the confidence to tell me his dreams, his wishes, his vision,” he added.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Investigators confirm a house explosion in the 800 block of 15th ave in Rockford, that reportedly happened around 1 AM Wednesday morning. Nicor and ComEd crews confirm there is no gas leak threat to neighbors, and have notified surrounding residents in a two-block radius they have shut down power as crews work to clear the scene. Investigators tell our crew on scene the house was vacant at the time of the explosion, and no injuries have been reported as well.

STILLMAN VALLEY, Ill. (WTVO) — An Ogle County woman, Theresa Miller, captured third place at the Heap’s Giant Pumpkin contest in Minooka, Ill. with her 1,600 lb pumpkin she named, ‘Baby’. Miller said the pumpkin has been growing for roughly six months since May, at times even growing up to 60 pounds in just a matter of days. “You never know what [the pumpkins] are going to look like,” said Miller.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Kidcaster Audrianna is an amazing meteorologist, helping out with the 7-Day forecast, but an even better fundraiser, organizing a local event to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The 5K walk/run will be at Harlem High School from 5pm-8 pm Saturday, September 23, 2023. Not only has Audrianna helped to organize this event, she is also fundraising by selling beaded bracelets. At last check, she has raised over $7,000.

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WTVO) — A lawsuit, filed last week against Boone County, accuses the county of not enforcing animal cruelty laws against Mexican-style rodeos that take place on private property. UIC Assistant Law Professor Conley Wouters filed the lawsuit on behalf of the animal rights group Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK), which has used drones to record footage of alleged animal abuse taking place on property in Boone County.
