West Virginia anglers were busy breaking a couple state fishing records on April 22. According to the state Division of Natural Resources, Jason Floyd from Washington, West Virginia, was fishing at the Belleville Lock and Dam on the Ohio River when he caught a 24-57-inch, 5.75-pound redhorse sucker fish. The catch was big enough to actually establish the first state record for the species.

The Minnesota Department of Fish & Wildlife has officially confirmed a 43.25-inch laker caught on March 12 from Lake Superior as the new state record lake trout. The agency posted the news on its Facebook page this week, cementing angler Isaiah Bartlett and his trout in Minnesota fishing history. His catch beat the state’s previous catch-and-release laker record — which is kept by length rather than weight — by only 3/4 inch.

The state of Wisconsin has a new record yellow bass! On April 22, angler Vairin Meesouk caught an absolute toilet lid from Lake Mendota, the northernmost and largest of the four lakes in Madison, Wisconsin. Emma Macek, a public information officer with the state Department of Natural Resources told Wired2Fish that Meesouk’s fish has been confirmed as the new state hook-and-line record yellow bass with a weight of 2 pounds, 13.8 ounces and a length of 16.5 inches.

Florida saw 659 boating accidents and 59 boating-related fatalities in 2023, many of them in Miami-Dade County, according to officials The uptick in overall incidents and fatalities inspired a push for increased boating safety in the state, and for measures to be taken to prevent future boating accidents.
