We first met Joe Dan Worley 20 years ago, along with his mother, wife Angel, and a three-month-old daughter, at Walter Reed Hospital outside Washington. A medic rushing to the aid of wounded Marines in Iraq, Worley was hit by a roadside bomb – his left leg blown off, his right riddled with bullets. "When I hit the ground, I was purely convinced that my entire body was just ravaged, I mean, that I was dead," he said.

Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster had been a soldier for three decades when Donald Trump named him his national security adviser just one month into his administration. "Lots of people told me not to do it," McMaster said. "People were calling me up who really detested President Trump and saying, 'You can't do it, it'll sulley your reputation.'"Thirteen months later, Trump fired him. U.S. Central Command has recommended permanently dismantling the Gaza pier, according to two U.S. officials. The pier, bedeviled by bad weather and mechanical malfunctions, has been in operation for only about 20 days since it was installed in May. In those 20 days, it has managed to deliver nearly 20 million pounds of aid.
