AbstractPatient-derived xenograft (PDX) models are widely used in cancer research. To investigate the genomic fidelity of non-small cell lung cancer PDX models, we established 48 PDX models from 22 patients enrolled in the TRACERx study. Multi-region tumor sampling increased successful PDX engraftment and most models were histologically similar to their parent tumor.

AbstractGenetics studies are used by wildlife managers and researchers to gain inference into a population of a species of interest. To gain these insights, microsatellites have been the primary method; however, there currently is a shift from microsatellites to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). With the different DNA requirements between microsatellites and SNPs, an investigation into which samples can provide adequate DNA yield is warranted.

Karen stared at the wreckage in her den. Atop a writing table next to her laptop, a birdcage’s crooked door hung loose, teetering on a single hinge. Her favorite pen lay inside the enclosure, and she groaned. She’d left the writing instrument on the desk within her muse’s reach, the perfect tool to pry an opening. Her wrinkled hands trembled. She’d gone out for the evening, binging old episodes of Downton Abbey at a friend’s house. Now her enjoyment vanished like moonlight at dawn.

Today would be memorable. After weeks working with confidential informant and gathering intelligence through covert surveillance, squad would execute raid on secret criminal organization. If we gather right evidence, we could stop spread of heresy. Fortune favors our labor. Thick fog hides movements in dark alley next to gang’s hangout. Drunk lays in gutter, cuddling with vodka bottle. His red eyes look ready to pop out of head. I put finger to lips, signaling silence. He nods and slugs back drink.

My client pawed my shoulder, interrupting my daydream about my late wife. For the briefest moment, my eyes tricked me into believing she’d been watching me from the courtroom gallery. A lavender pillbox hat, a style she’d favored, stood out among the throng of observers. My thumb brushed against a familiar platinum band, spinning it on my ring finger. Who was I fooling? Mary Beth was gone. Only my job remained. And here I sat, beside another perp looking for me to get him off on a technicality.

The old Camaro blasted through the winter dawn. As the car neared the last hill, Donna mashed the gas pedal to feed the V-8 engine. With a defiant roar, the beast charged up the steep incline. The icy road tried — and failed — to tame the aggression, the slick slope causing only the slightest shimmy as the Camaro left tire prints on virgin snow. Donna couldn’t keep a grin off her face. She patted the dashboard and basked in the glory of conquest.

Christine brushed aside a stray lock of her hair and leaned forward on her elbows to study the brass puzzle box. The octagonal contraption lay on the wooden kitchen table. She traced its intricate bas-relief forms with a fingernail — a cornucopia brimming with autumn fruits and vegetables — apples, pears, pumpkin, and squash. Images of farm animals — horses, cows, pigs, and chickens — lined the edges. The box gave off the scent of old metal, the kind that stuck to her fingers.
