Carilion Clinic gets state approval for kidney transplant center in Roanoke

After years of preparation and lobbying, state regulators approved a kidney transplant program at Carilion Clinic’s hospital in Roanoke. It will be the first transplant program in Southwest Virginia. Doctor David Salzberg, the lead surgeon for the program, said it will help address the high rate of renal failure in that part of the state and make it easier for patients to get care close to home. “All of us have gotten the congratulations emails," Salzberg told reporters Thursday.
WWII soldier from Martinsville, last seen on D-Day, is no longer missing

A World War Two soldier from Martinsville, who was last seen in the early hours of the D-Day invasion, is no longer missing. Sergeant Ivor Thornton was in the second wave to land at Omaha Beach and was last seen wading toward the shore. A body was recovered a few days later but could not be positively identified. The remains were interred at a U. S. military cemetery in France.

Virginia gets major federal disaster declaration for winter floods

President Donald Trump has approved limited federal disaster assistance for a series of floods that hit Southwest Virginia this winter. The governor’s office announced the major federal disaster declaration this/Friday afternoon. The move allows some disaster funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, but it does not include direct federal assistance to individuals.
UVA releases redacted reports into deadly 2022 shooting

The University of Virginia has released reports from two independent investigations related to a deadly 2022 shooting on campus. Much of the detail about the shooter, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. and his interactions with the victims and the university are redacted, however, due to federal student privacy laws. The law firms that conducted the reviews note that it was not their responsibility to determine a motive for the shooting.
Former UVA President John Casteen dies at age 81

Former University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III died Tuesday at age 81. A statement from the university said Casteen died after a brief bout with pancreatic cancer. Casteen earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from UVA and returned to Charlottesville to lead the university as president in 1990. He retired in 2010. Casteen was UVA's seventh president and only the school's first president, Edwin Alderman, served longer.

Governor Glenn Youngkin has started taking action on bills from this year’s General Assembly session. Among the first batch were several involving economic development issues. At an event Wednesday afternoon, Youngkin said he was signing bills that set incentives for some big manufacturing developments, including chip maker Micron in Northern Virginia, electric battery maker Microporous near Danville and the Commonwealth Fusion power plant in Central Virginia.

Youngkin declares state of emergency in advance of winter storm

Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency Monday in advance of a winter storm. Snowfall is expected to begin early Tuesday and last into Wednesday. The National Weather Service will put Winter Storm Warnings into effect Tuesday morning for nearly all of the state, with the exception of Far Southwest Virginia. Two to six inches of snow is expected across much of the state, with the highest amounts north of Interstate 64.
