    A World War Two soldier from Martinsville, who was last seen in the early hours of the D-Day invasion, is no longer missing. Sergeant Ivor Thornton was in the second wave to land at Omaha Beach and was last seen wading toward the shore. A body was recovered a few days later but could not be positively identified. The remains were interred at a U. S. military cemetery in France.

    President Donald Trump has approved limited federal disaster assistance for a series of floods that hit Southwest Virginia this winter. The governor’s office announced the major federal disaster declaration this/Friday afternoon. The move allows some disaster funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, but it does not include direct federal assistance to individuals.

    The University of Virginia has released reports from two independent investigations related to a deadly 2022 shooting on campus. Much of the detail about the shooter, Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. and his interactions with the victims and the university are redacted, however, due to federal student privacy laws. The law firms that conducted the reviews note that it was not their responsibility to determine a motive for the shooting.

    Former University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III died Tuesday at age 81. A statement from the university said Casteen died after a brief bout with pancreatic cancer. Casteen earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from UVA and returned to Charlottesville to lead the university as president in 1990. He retired in 2010. Casteen was UVA's seventh president and only the school's first president, Edwin Alderman, served longer.
