Detectives are searching for two boys believed to be responsible for a stabbing and assault in Melbourne that has left an elderly man and teenager seriously injured. Police were first called to an incident at a shopping centre in Keysborough, in the city's southeast, on Friday before 5pm after reports a 70-year-old man had been hurt. Officers were told the boys tried to leave a chemist with stolen goods. The elderly man attempted to stop the pair when he was assaulted.

Two men have been hospitalised and dozens of residents have been evacuated after an explosion tore a hole through a Western Sydney unit complex. Emergency services were called to Clarence Street in Lidcombe following reports of a blast at a three-storey building on Friday about 6.30am. Firefighters arrived at the second level to find a man trapped under rubble and suffering serious injuries, including burns to his hands and face, paramedics said.
