During the months of June and July, 1976, the East Anglian region experienced an average rainfall of just 1.5 inches, which triggered a serious drought. Anglian Water put some restrictions in place in May to prepare, but when no rain was forthcoming, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service were banned from using piped water to replenish their fire engines and farmers were asked to reduce stubble burning to save water. The Grafham Water reservoir suffered badly and levels fell to an all-time low.

Liam sadly died at the age of 14 after a four-year battle with cancer, but managed to raise a staggering £320,000 for charity and was recognised for his fundraising efforts with several awards, including a Pride in Britain award. He was diagnosed with a synovial sarcoma in his leg in 2005 and underwent gruelling chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. His family, parents Mark and Sarah, and brother Callum, set up the Liam Fairhurst Foundation to continue Liam's fundraising legacy.
