May 11—GRAFTON, N.D. — If a referendum to fund the creation of a new Walsh County jail and sheriff's office fails, it won't be long before the existing jail closes, said the county sheriff and the courthouse judge. District Court Judge Barbara Whelan said the Walsh County Jail could close in a year, based on the issues it's facing. The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has been reducing the number of beds available at the jail over the years because of the conditions.

May 10—FORT TOTTEN, N.D. — A young nonprofit organization focused on youth sports in a tribal community is doing more than just supporting athletics. A consultant for the organization said it's acting much like a parks and recreation department, which larger communities may take for granted. Dean Duphinais Jr., who also is a founder of Spirit Lake Youth Sports, said the group is not a tribal entity, but is partnering with the tribe on a number of future projects.

May 10—GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Empathy is what makes good lawyers great, Gov. Kelly Armstrong told 73 graduating law students and an auditorium packed with family, friends and other guests during the UND School of Law graduation ceremony. Judges, prosecutors, negotiators, professors and others use empathy to help them do their jobs, Armstrong said during the Saturday, May 10, event. Law, and the world in general, will be better if people make empathy a bigger part of their personality, he said.
