A man who repeatedly stabbed another man with a pair of scissors in an apparent road-rage attack at a Christchurch intersection, leaving him critically injured, has been jailed for three years. Avishek Chaudhary, 26, was sentenced at the Christchurch District Court on Friday, after being convicted of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm for attacking the man at a Riccarton intersection last September.

The cause of the Roxburgh town hall fire in Central Otago can not be determined, Fire and Emergency investigators say. A blaze gutted the building that was home to an 128-year-old cinema, a day after Waitangi Day. The movie theatre was first built in 1897 and had previously been part of a Guinness World Records claim of possibly being "longest continuously running movie theatre in the world". The fire came only a month after the building avoided major damage during a fire in January.

Imam Gamal Fouda, who led Al Noor Mosque through New Zealand's darkest hours after the Christchurch terror attacks, has announced he is leaving his role as Imam. Fouda is a survivor of the 15 March 2019 mosque attacks when a gunman opened fire at the Riccarton Mosque during Friday prayer, before travelling to Linwood Mosque and doing the same, leaving a total of 51 people dead.
