Saturday evening May 24th, Chase Van Houten of Wading River was penalized after his victory in the 20-lap INEX Legend Race Car feature event. Today, Riverhead Raceway officials clarified the penalty. Chase Van Houten was disqualified for Unsportsmanlike Conduct post-race, not verbal abuse of a NASCAR official. No additional penalties will be forthcoming when the INEX Legend Race Cars return to action Saturday June 7,, for a 20-lap event. The survival of local journalism depends on your support.

Entering the final weekend of what is one of the wettest months of May on record, Riverhead Raceway had been able to skirt the wet stuff, until now. Friday morning track management announced with a highly unfavorable forecast projected, they were moving the Saturday evening NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series program to Sunday afternoon June 1. The Local Sports League Team Night that was scheduled for Sunday will move to Sunday afternoon as well.

The U.S. Navy is requesting interviews with former employees, or their surviving family members, who worked at the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant in Calverton, New York between 1954 and 1996. “Your firsthand experience is vital to supporting our ongoing environmental cleanup efforts at the site,” the Navy said in a press release.

Sunday marks the beginning of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through Nov. 30. Forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are predicting above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year. The agency is forecasting a range of 13 to 19 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 6-10 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3-5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher).
