An oxygen concentrator at a Riverhead nursing home caught fire early this morning, prompting the evacuation of some residents from their rooms due to smoke conditions in part of the building. Riverhead firefighters responded to a call for a structure fire at Acadia Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation on Woodcrest Avenue shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire in the oxygen concentrator machine with extinguishers, Riverhead Fire Department Chief Pete Kurzyna said.

The Riverhead man who pleaded guilty last month to aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, assault and aggravated DWI charges in the multi-vehicle crash on County Road 105 in August was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in prison today, Suffolk District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced. The Riverhead Town Board intends to hire its outside auditing firm to conduct forensic audits of the Riverhead Business Improvement District Management Association for 2023 and 2024, Supervisor Tim Hubbard announced in a press release Monday night.  The board will also hire an outside production agency to produce two Alive on 25 street festival events this summer and the Halloween Fest on Oct. 25, the supervisor said in the release.

The New York Marine Rescue Center will host its annual Oceans of Hope fundraiser at the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center on Friday, May 16, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The cocktail party will feature live music, exciting cuisine, and entertainment, withvarious auction and raffle prizes. The 29th Annual East End Garden Festival, organized by the Riverhead Rotary Club, takes place May 4- 11 at Tanger Outlets, in the Route 58 parking lot. The gigantic week-long plant sale is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
