Riverhead PAL held its annual bike rodeo Saturday at Stotzky Park. Forty-nine children in kindergarten through 6th grade participated, competing for the top scores in three age groups to win brand new bicycles and a host of other prizes. The rodeo is a chance to teach kids important lessons about bicycle safety and provides an opportunity for them to test their riding skills on a specially made course.
Appellate court upholds even-year election law, ruling it will take effect for 2025 vote

A New York State appellate court has upheld a 2023 law moving most local elections to even-numbered years. The unanimous ruling, issued yesterday by a five-judge panel in Rochester, also held that the law will take effect for the 2025 local election cycle. The decision reverses an October 2024 ruling by a lower court in Onondaga County, which had found the law unconstitutional. The appellate judges determined that the law does not violate the New York State Constitution.

Gary Joyce of Aquebogue couldn’t wait to enlist. He wanted to sign up right out of high school but his parents wouldn’t give their consent and he wasn’t old enough to enlist without it. As soon as he turned 18, he dropped out of college and joined the Army. It was December 1967. “I signed up for infantry, paratroopers, special forces,” Joyce said. Fred McLaughlin: One of the lucky ones in ‘a stupid war’

Longtime Riverhead resident Fred McLaughlin knows he was one of the lucky ones. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on Feb 1, 1967, a year of major escalation for the United States in Vietnam. It was the peak year for bombing sorties flown as part of the massive Operation Rolling Thunder campaign. A native of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, McLaughlin was 20 years old when he entered the army. He was sent to Fort Sheridan, an Army post north of Chicago, on Lake Michigan.
