Photo by Derek DavisChildren play a piano at Pumpkin Valley Farm during the farm’s two-day sunflower festival. This was a very fun assignment. I hadn’t visited a sunflower farm before, so I was in awe when I arrived and began wandering through the maze in the fields. There were stands you could climb to get above the sunflowers and take images looking down, and there were people dressed in sunflower-themed outfits.

This holiday season marks 25 years that LaCasse has been installing the lights in public places. These lights will be moved to Lincoln Park.

Robert Drew, 71, of Frankfort, likes to lister to conversations around him at the Coffee Break Café in Hampden. When it comes to his own politics he tries not to say too much. Derek Davis/Staff Photographer Susan Taylor, 66, has been a librarian at the Edythe Dyer Community Library for 30 years. She thinks Hampden’s social structure has changed to the point where the sense of connectedness has eroded, and politics has played a role in that.

It was all hands on deck in Damariscotta on Monday morning for the annual Pumpkinfest Regatta. Contestants in costumes sought to stay afloat while rowing or motoring their enormous gourds. The event capped off this year’s Pumpkinfest, which lasted all weekend and drew thousands to the small coastal town.

Since 1869, the Cumberland County Fair has run almost every year. There are rides, animal and antique tractor pulls, a livestock auction, a pig scramble and rodeo, cooking classes and harness racing, as well as all the exhibition hall competitions, from baking contests to fruit and vegetable exhibitions. This year’s fair runs through Sept. 28. People walk through the Cumberland County Fair on Monday.

This is the fifth year that the farm has held the festival, in which people can roam about the fields taking pictures and can cut flowers for a cost of $2/per stalk. The event also has music, food and games for children to participate in.
