Rouquette joined the recent list of Harlingen girls track and field athletes to commit to the Division I level, which includes Jazmine Thompson (Wake Forest) and Faith Franklin (Vanderbilt). Alana not only earned an athletic scholarship, but also an academic one.

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Last year’s one-point loss at the state meet left a bad taste in the mouth of the Edcouch-Elsa girls powerlifting program. At Bert Ogden Arena, the Yellow Jackets redeemed themselves by winning the Class 5A DII Texas High School Association Women’s Powerlifters Championship. It was the program’s fourth state title in the last five years.

MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men’s golf team picked up wins against Nicholls State and East Texas A&M in the South Texas Match Play to advance to the finals. The Vaqueros began the day strong at the McAllen Country Club, defeating the Colonels 5-0. As a team, UTRGV combined for 21 birdies, three eagles, and just three bogeys in the match. Fifth year senior Taj Sutherland defeated James Bould 5&3.

GOLIAD, Texas (ValleyCentral) — La Feria’s deepest postseason run in program history came to a close in the Region IV-4A final Friday night. The Lions fell to Austin Lyndon B. Johnson, 43-42. La Feria led by as many as nine points in the second half, but the Jaguars finished the game on a 13-3 run. LBJ’s Marquis Murry II took advantage of his trip to the free throw line with less than ten seconds remaining, nailing both of his free throws that gave LBJ the one-point lead.

McAllen and Nikki Rowe High Schools were two of the five boy’s basketball programs from the Rio Grande Valley that advanced to the third round. The Bulldogs punched their ticket to round three after an overtime win on the road against Laredo Nixon, setting up a date with Leander Glenn in the regional semifinals.
