HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — With the 16-5 win against Incarnate Word, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team secured home field advantage in the Southland Conference tournament. The Vaqueros finished conference play with a 22-8 record. The 22 conference wins is the program’s most all-time. The win against the Cardinals also extended UTRGV’s winning streak to seven straight games. This is the second time this season the Vaqueros have won seven in a row.

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Four more Rio Grande Valley baseball programs punched their tickets to the area round of the state playoffs. At San Benito High School, PSJA North and Rivera went toe-to-toe in a decisive game three. North’s 4-run first inning was all the run support Teddy Estudillo needed on the mound. Estudillo pitched a complete game shutout in route to a 4-0 win. This is the first time in over a decade the Raiders have advanced past the bi-district round.

Rouquette joined the recent list of Harlingen girls track and field athletes to commit to the Division I level, which includes Jazmine Thompson (Wake Forest) and Faith Franklin (Vanderbilt). Alana not only earned an athletic scholarship, but also an academic one.

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Last year’s one-point loss at the state meet left a bad taste in the mouth of the Edcouch-Elsa girls powerlifting program. At Bert Ogden Arena, the Yellow Jackets redeemed themselves by winning the Class 5A DII Texas High School Association Women’s Powerlifters Championship. It was the program’s fourth state title in the last five years.

MCALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men’s golf team picked up wins against Nicholls State and East Texas A&M in the South Texas Match Play to advance to the finals. The Vaqueros began the day strong at the McAllen Country Club, defeating the Colonels 5-0. As a team, UTRGV combined for 21 birdies, three eagles, and just three bogeys in the match. Fifth year senior Taj Sutherland defeated James Bould 5&3.

Today marked the first of 15 practices the Vaqueros will have until April 17 and the intensity was cranked up a notch in comparison to the Fall session. ELSA, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Addie Anzaldua has her sights set on a third powerlifting state title in the 105-pound weight class. The senior from Edcouch-Elsa High School has the chance to win that state title at the Bert Ogden Arena. Yellow Jackets head powerlifting coach Patrick Boutwell expects a strong showing from the two-time state champion. He said, “She makes it a point to get in the weight room and improve her numbers. She’s always wanting to go higher and higher.
