The vert gained when hiking the Cactus to Clouds Trail in Palm Springs, California, is about equal to climbing the Grand Teton one and a half times — 11,000 feet. It’s also about equal to the vert from Everest Base Camp to that peak’s summit (on the Nepalese side). Or about climbing 1,000 flights of stairs. And it is one of my most favorite hikes in the world. There are many reasons I love this trail, which Backpacker magazine once named the fifth-most difficult day hike in the United States.
