Toni Jackson, the school nutrition director for Trimble County Public Schools is gearing up for one of the small northern Kentucky district’s biggest events of the year. The school will grill about 1,200 burgers over the course of three hours. “This whole town will smell like grilled burgers that day, like you cannot drive through Bedford without smelling burgers,” Jackson said. And this is local beef, cooked by volunteers from the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association.

Dosker Manor resident Dwight Beal is one of the few people in Louisville to win an eviction court case decided by a jury in years. That’s exactly what happened in January. “I’ve never won anything in my life, but I wanted something that really meant something to me all these years,” he said. He’s lived in his C Building apartment for more than three years, and it’s how he escaped homelessness.

Louisville Metro Corrections officers found a 54-year-old man unresponsive around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. He was taken to a hospital in downtown Louisville where he died two hours later. Jail officials said he died of natural causes, according to an LMDC press release. The man had been in LMDC’s custody since 2022. LMDC officials said Friday they won’t release the man’s identity until after they contact his family. The Jefferson County Coroner’s office has not identified the man.

For years, shopper Rhonda Reeves has mainly shopped at the Kroger at 2710 West Broadway. But there are a few ingredients she’s always had trouble finding: barley, pimentos and baked potatoes. These are staples she said she needs to stock up on in her home in the California neighborhood. This Kroger is one of just two full-service grocery stores in the West End, which comprises nine predominantly Black neighborhoods, so Reeves said she doesn’t have a lot of options.

When Leta Watson, a committee member of Room in the Inn program, heard from many women that they felt safe and welcomed in the shelter, she was elated. “One of the ladies was sad and I said, ‘Well, what’s wrong, Kim?’ And she said, ‘Oh, I miss my family,’” Watson said.
